How Influential The SBY’s Warning is

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s warning about a politically-motivated movement on World Anti-Corruption Day was merely intended to heighten the people’s awareness, a senior minister said. “It was not an expression of worry but a hint to increase public awareness,” Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto said after a cabinet meeting at the presidential palace on Friday.

Djoko said the head of state only wished to say that the movement that would involve a lot of people on World Anti-Corruption Day needed to be managed well to avoid any undesired eventuality. He said the government would let all people participate in the commemoration day on December 9.

“It is not that a solidarity action planned for December 9 in connection with world anti-corruption day contravenes government policy. So anybody who wishes to participate in the action is free to do so as it is line with the government’s anti-corruption stance,” he said.

In the same vein, State Intelligence Agency (BIN) Chief Sutanto called on people to continue to participate in the commemoration. He declined to elaborate on the information President Yudhoyono had received in connection with the event.

When opening the cabinet meeting on Friday, President Yudhoyono said he had received information that on December 9 certain parties would mobilize a large number of people with certain political motives. “According to information I have received, some people will take part in the commemoration not with the expected motives but with political motives that are not in line with our anti-corruption efforts,” he said.

He also said that it was not impossible for figures he had never known active in the corruption drive to emerge. “Well, I would welcome them if they really wish to participate in the eradication of corruption in the country for the sake of the people,” he said.

The President on the occasion also said that behind massive coverage of the case of Bank Century he also saw political motives which could not be categorized as fulfilling the people’s curiosity. “I am saying this so that you will not be surprised later. My advice is whatever will happen, especially in Jakarta, it must not disrupt our concentration and determination to carry out our main duties to make the development successful to improve the welfare of the people,” he said.
